I’ve been delighted this summer by this prairie garden planted in a forgotten asphalt basketball court (employee recreation area from the building's days as Industrial Nucleonics) and maintained by Ohio State Landscape Architecture students.

In a summer of weird weather--skies choked with the smoke of Canadian wildfires, the hottest North American summer on record, historic droughts in one place, record rainfall and flooding another--the neighborhood got its share August 11.

An EF0 tornado roared through at 10:05 AM with winds exceeding 80 mph in a narrow strip from Upper Arlington near Kingsdale, down Ackerman Rd, through Union Cemetery, into the Olentangy Wetlands (pictured), then up Glen Echo, before tossing a car on 71 near Weber. Huge trees--including a 120-year-old oak at OSUMC's Ackerman Complex--were downed or uprooted. Treetops ripped off. Branches snapped off. Utility poles toppled. Powerlines downed. Windows blown out at Lucky's Market and Derive Brewing Co. Metal torn from the roof of OSU Sports Med and wrapped around poles across the street.

A week later record one-day rainfall (nearly 2.87') flooded everything and backed-up sewers.
